Pregnancy Skincare Tips By Mariga Sheedy

I am a massive advocate for the work Mariga Sheedy does when it comes to skin. So much so I still rave to everyone who will listen about my skincare consultation with her last year. When I decided to do a pregnancy skincare post, it was a no brainer to turn to Mariga for tips and advice.  Last time round, my skin suffered dreadfully, it was dry and really uncomfortable. Mariga's Nourishing Oil was a complete lifesaver and three years later, I still consider it a Holy Grail product.

Depending on the skincare routine you are on before becoming pregnant, it may be necessary for you to change some of your products.

Skincare containing vitamin A, retinol and salicylic acid are not recommended for use during pregnancy. These ingredients are most often found in products aimed at acne control and anti-ageing. In the Skin Essentials by Mariga range the products containing these ingredients are Overnight Repair Cream, Blemish Control Cream and Salicylic Cleanser. If you are not sure whether your creams have these ingredients please ask your skincare professional for advice.

Some professional treatments, particularly peels, will contain various acids so you should let your therapist know before treatment if you are pregnant so that she can tailor your treatment accordingly. Some electrical treatments are also contraindicated but you can still have a lovely, relaxing treatment to help keep your skin nourished and hydrated.

During this time, much of the nourishment that your body receives from your diet can go to your baby so the skin can suffer from lack of nutrients. You can counter this by using products rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. I particularly recommend my Nourishing Oil or Lipid Repair Concentrate for this.

Some women will experience pigment changes in the skin during pregnancy. These show up as brown patches on the face often referred to as 'mask of pregnancy'. This is very much down to individual genetics and can’t be prevented but using a good SPF30 daily will prevent the marks from becoming permanent through UV exposure.

Some women will find that their skin becomes radiant, especially after the first trimester, giving that pregnancy ‘glow’. For others, unfortunately, the opposite can occur and many women experience a recurrence of long-forgotten acne. As the actives to control breakouts are not suitable for use while pregnant the best that you can do is to keep your skin strong to help reduce the occurrence of spots. Drink plenty of water and use skincare with nourishing oils as above and add a hyaluronic-acid based moisturiser such as my Hydrating Cream to help prevent water loss which can lead to sensitivities and spots. Getting plenty of sleep helps too (while you still can!).

Whether or not you get stretch marks is greatly governed by genetics and is different for every person. Since they are, in effect, a scar that is created deep in the dermis, topical products that you put on your skin will not prevent them or remove them (no matter what the marketing says!). You can use nice, rich moisturising products on your tummy to help minimise their appearance and supply nourishment for quicker healing and to keep skin healthy but don’t expect prevention. I recommend rich natural products such as shea butter, cocoa butter or rosehip seed oil. If you are on a budget then baby oil will lock in moisture and keep your skin feeling soft, it just won’t supply nutrients to the skin cells. Whatever you choose, make sure that it is as pure a formula as possible with absolutely NO perfumes or essential oils which will overburden the skin’s immune system and cause accelerated free radical activity.

If you are expecting and have any questions about your skin or products please give me a call on 053 9145981 or email info@skinessentialsbymariga.com We would be happy to advise you on the best course of action.

Skin Analysis and Facial With Skin Essentials By Mariga

While down in Wexford at the weekend, Skin Essentials By Mariga invited me for a complimentary  Skin Analysis and Facial. Knowing how much of a guru Mariga is, I jumped at the chance.

On arrival, I had a skin analysis done. To prep for this, I had to go bare faced for most of Saturday (the horror!!), all I could use was a sunscreen on my face and even with that I had to remove it two hours before my appointment. There is a good reason for this though as Mariga wants to see how your skin is in its natural state.

During the analysis, the following was checked
  • Overall health of my skin
  • Hydration Levels
  • Identify any problem areas
  • My current skincare and lifestyle regime including any medications or supplements I am on. I'm not on medication but do take a multivitamin and pro biotic.
I've always been a bit afraid of these type of procedures as I know my skin could be better. I go through phases where it is extremely dehydrated and other times I get a spotty outbreak on my chin. The other times my cheeks will redden thanks to a new skin product.

The analysis revealed that I have reactive skin with low oil levels and some texture issues. Mariga recommended a few products for me to improve my skin so I am definitely going to start buying those. I'm 28 and thought my skin age would be 28 to somewhere in my 30's but the analysis revealed I have the skin of a 26 year old. Mariga contributed this to exfoliating very little.

Afterwards, I was treated to a facial from the lovely Jane. I haven't had a facial in forever so it was nice to chill out a bit and let her work her magic. On the cards was a heavenly facial massage followed by an enzyme exfoliation using Mariga's own exfoliator with an ultrasonic tool that got deep down to clear out any dirt in my skin . To finish Jane applied an high strength hyaluronic acid treatment and sea kelp mask then a SPF 30 moisturiser.

I learnt so much from both treatments including what types of products that I should avoid. It was also an eye opener into so many of the skincare brands that I am familiar with. Some things I found out were a complete shocker and completely opened my eyes. I tend to read my ingredients on products before I buy them but now I am going to research products a lot more before parting with my money.

I would definitely recommend the trip down to Mariga for a skin analysis. The treatment costs €50 and takes around an hour. This is an absolute bargain because you will learn so much in that time. I know that if I lived closer to Wexford, I would go to Mariga and Jane exclusively.

Have you ever had a skin analysis?

Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter is well and truly on the way. As the days get colder it's really inmportant to look after your skin. I always suffer from dry skin coming into the winter. It can be really frustrating! Last week I turned to skin care guru Mariga Sheedy from Skin Essentials By Mariga for tips on looking after your skin during the winter months.
Heres what advice she has for you:

One of the biggest problems for skin in the winter is the loss of water through the epidermis due to cold air and heated rooms. This breaks down the defence layer of your skin, allowing water to evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, flaking and irritation. Underlying problems such as acne and rosacea will become worse.
Tips to combat moisture loss:
-Use a night cream or oil even if you have oily skin to keep moisture sealed in.
-Leave-on moisturising masks are great to use once or twice a week at night if you have dry skin.
-You still need an SPF during the day but add a couple of drops of Rosehip Seed Oil underneath if you have normal skin, Nourishing Oil if you have dry skin.
-If suitable for you take a supplement of Omega 3,6,9 to strengthen skin from the inside.
-Reduce exfoliation to decrease stress on the skin's defence layer.
-Don't scrub, ever! Use an enzyme based exfoliant.
-If you find it hard to drink water in the winter try green or white tea to hydrate without making you cold!
-The ingredients to look for in your skincare are essential fatty acids, hyaluronic acid and natural (non-fragrant) oils such as rose hip, jojoba, avocado seed.
-If you work/live in a very dry environment consider investing in a humidifier or place a bowl of water near the radiator.
-For dry skin on your body add a few drops of rosehip seed oil to your bath water, but be careful not to slip :)

Mariga's skincare range is fantastic, I'm a huge fan of the nourishing oil but here are some other lovelies from her range ideal for Winter:

L-R Rosehip Oil €20/30ml,Nourishing Oil €15/15ml,
Lipid Repair Concentrate (for dry, damaged skin) €55/30ml
You should also use the
SPF30 day cream €30/30ml and
Skin Comfort Cleanser €22/30ml

There is loads of choice on the market for Winter Skincare, my personal favourites are the Vichy Aqualia
Thermal Serum, Mask & Mineral Balm. These lovelies are like a drink of water for your skin. I especially love applying the Mineral Balm as a super hydrating mask, pop a good layer on and lie back for 5-10 minutes. You will love it.

I'm always on the lookout for a decent day cream and had heard of Lancomes Genefique Nutric Nourishing Youth Activating Cream. So the other day I tried a bit. This is a rich luxurious cream that claims to change the behaviour patterns of dry skin, maybe even banishing dry skin to your past. Sounds like a miracle to me so come pay day, I'll be buying the 30ml (€35)to try out.
